Brathwaite falls but Windies still have Hope in thrilling second Test

With the West Indies in cruise control, England were beginning to worry as the tourists were edging ever closer to victory.

"I think it's put a lot of doubters out there to bed", Law told Sky Sports.

Hope, who scored 147 in the first innings, remained unbeaten on 118 in the second innings to take his side to a five-wicket win.

Only Australia, with 404 for three back in 1948, had made more to win in the fourth innings of a Headingley Test.

Most remarkable of all was Hope, who hadn't hit a hundred in any of his previous 11 Tests.

But the West Indies will head into the final session still in with a chance of just their fourth away Test win, excluding fixtures against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, in 88 matches spanning 20 years.

In an exciting turnaround on Monday, England declared on 490 for eight, a lead of 322 after a superb performance by Moeen Ali gave them a good shot at victory. Brathwaite and Hope put on 144 on Tuesday following their first-innings partnership of 246, when Brathwaite made 134.

England, in common with the West Indies, dropped catches and normally reliable first slip Alastair Cook floored Brathwaite, yet to add to his overnight four, off Stuart Broad.

"[He's got] plenty of courage, plenty of character and plenty of determination, and he played really well".

However, right on the stroke of tea, Moeen Ali provided the big breakthrough the hosts were looking for when Brathwaite was caught by Stokes at slip off his bowling for 95, which came off 180 balls and included 12 boundaries.

A mixture of calm defiance combined with judicious attacking saw them frustrate the England attack to the point that James Anderson, who had a run-in with opener Kieran Powell, and Stuart Broad, who was warned for kicking the pitch petuantly, were left increasingly disgruntled.

There have been 534 first-class matches at Headingley and amazingly, though some greats of the game at Yorkshire, England and beyond have played at this world famous ground, no one had recorded a hundred in either innings. With Windies needing 37, Cook also dropped Hope at slip off Broad although that miss was probably too late anyway as was Ben Stokes's drop of Blackwood on the boundary with only six runs required.

Jermaine Blackwood was positive as he slashed his way to 41 off 45 balls to send the home team's fielders scurrying all over Headingley before he was out stumped with two runs still needed.
