"The University of North Texas is helping students affected by Hurricane Harvey by immediately admitting them and waiving application fees", the release states.

Nathan DeVault with the American Red Cross National Capital Region said about 18 volunteers have been deployed to either Texas or Louisiana.

"For some, this is their first major deployment", Concannon said.

Hurricane Harvey's effects on the Texas coast are likely to be long-lasting and varied.

The Red Cross has 20 shelters already set up in Texas, but because of the continued rain and flooding they are set to expand that number to 50 shelters, according to Benjamin.

"I know that we have over 200 of these vehicles that are now in route going to Texas, not all of them coming from the Washington area", said Benjamin. These numbers are expected to grow and dozens of additional shelters could open.

The Red Cross has enough shelter supplies in Texas to support 28,000 people and supplies for an additional 22,000 people are being sent in now. "They are always ready to go and do what they need to help".
