Gorakhpur tragedy: One more child dies in BRD Hospital; toll now 72

The report sent to the state government indicted several doctors and other hospital staff for not doing enough to avert the crisis even when they knew the oxygen supply was low.

The Allahabad High Court bench of Chief Justice Dilip Babasaheb Bhosale and Justice Yashwant Varma set the date for hearing on the PILs on 29 August while its Lucknow Bench directed the authorities to file replies by 9 October 2017. The bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Daya Shankar Tiwari passed the order on the PIL filed by activist Nutan Thakur after hearing her, advocate general Raghavendra Pratap Singh and Medical Education Counsel Sanjay Bhasin.

The committee has recommended that administrative inquiry and action could be initiated against the two doctors.

The report also states that cleanliness of hospital and the wards was unsatisfactory, besides presence of dogs and rats in the premises.

According to the IMA, there are many other discrepancies in the health system of Uttar Pradesh such as ICUs in 10 districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh do not function because of lack of staff and other resources.

Earlier, Mishra was suspended on charges of negligence after over 60 children died in the peadiatric ward of the hospital allegedly due to lack of liquid oxygen supply. However, the reports were denied by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who said Encephalitis was the main cause along with other issues related to lack of cleanliness.

The IMA panel comprising national vice-president Ashok Agrawal and president of the IMA branch in Gorakhpur, B B Gupta, then gathered information from the acting principal and head of paediatrics on the child deaths.
