Huge explosion in Sunderland: 'House totally collapsed'

Images posted on social media showed one half of the semi-detached property in Rosslyn Avenue, Ryhope, reduced to a pile of rubble and significant damage to the second home, caused by the blast.

Northumbria police said on Twitter that they were aware of the incident and that emergency services were attending the scene.

The huge explosion happened yesterday morning and left a hole where the house used to be.

Ms Judson added that Ms Shepherd was able to talk in the ambulance as she was being taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where she was treated.

She was said to be "conscious and talking".

Scores of police, ambulance and fire crew could be seen working at the scene, with debris strewn across the road.

One tweeted: "Right so it's just sounded like a bomb has exploded in ryhope; house literally shook".
