Bus driver shortage raises ire of Dallas school trustees

All drivers must pay special attention to children, be focused, and exercise caution when in the vicinity of a school bus stop, as student riders can sometimes be unpredictable.

There are just over 16,000 school buses on the road in Indiana, according to the Indiana State Police.

Drivers who illegally pass a school bus and are seen by law enforcement can be pulled over and issued a moving violation.

"So you know when that bus starts slowing down".

Police get complaints nearly every day as drivers blow past school bus stop signs and speed through school zones.

For multi-lane roads with grass or concrete barriers, such as USA 50, only vehicles behind the bus when its red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended must stop.

Transportation officials say another important key to student safety is motorists who are alert when they see a school bus.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, school buses are 70 times safer than cars, and 10 times safer than walking. Multi-lane roads with no barriers between the lanes, like some portions of SR 57S, all motorists must stop when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
