During testimony at the civil trial, Swift's attorney Douglas Baldridge repeatedly asked David Mueller why his right hand was behind Swift in the 2013 photo op. Swift countersued for assault and battery.

He said she had cost him his $150,000-a-year job as a host at country station KYGO-FM.

Mr Baldridge did get Mueller to concede that various supervisors with KYGO and its parent firm had discussed the possibility of letting him go even before the encounter with Swift.

"She's just trying to tell people out there that you can say no when someone puts their hand on you", Baldridge said. "Any woman - rich, poor, famous or not - is entitled to not have that happen". She is seeking a symbolic one dollar (77p) damages, saying she wants to serve as an example to other women who have been assaulted.

Mueller's cross-examination will continue this morning, and the trial is expected to last nine days.

A photo published by the TMZ celebrity news website showing Swift posing between Mueller and his girlfriend is expected to be among the key pieces of evidence.

Mueller's lawyer, Gabriel McFarland, showed jurors the photograph during his opening remarks.

She claimed he slipped his hand under her dress and grabbed her bare bottom as they posed.

In a deposition past year, Swift said, "He reached up under my skirt and grabbed my ass right when I was having to pose for the photo, and it felt intentional that that would be the time he would choose to do it".

Mueller, then 51, was assigned to attend Swift's concert at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

McFarland also suggested that Mueller may have been a victim of mistaken identity and that Swift might be confusing him with another man who was there.

Mueller maintains that although he applied at top 20 market radio stations after he was sacked, he was unable to find new job following Swift's allegation and being fired from KYGO. Swift, however, did not specifically request that Mueller be fired. He also asked Mueller for a reason why Swift would make up her story, to which the former DJ responded, "I can not". He's seeking up to $3 million U.S.in damages.

Taylor Swift is in court over claims a former DJ sexually assaulted her before a concert.

The Denver trial follows a hard 12 months for the singer after a much-ridiculed 2016 summer fling with British actor Tom Hiddleston.

Earlier, Mueller finished his second day of testimony after being called as part of his case.

Also damning? In July, a judge sanctioned Mueller based on some particularly questionable behavior following the incident.

"It is very hard to understand how he spent so little time and effort to preserve the very evidence which-one might think-could have helped him to prove his claims, and why he evidently responded with nonchalance when that evidence was lost", Martinez said.

Baldridge asked Mueller why he hadn't applied at stations that weren't in the top 20, and Mueller said he did apply at a few.
