Horgan and his cabinet were sworn in last week.

Clark sent out a statement Friday morning to supporters that said she was honored to serve as leader and premier and that she's proud of everything she accomplished.

She gained prominence in Gordon Campbell's Liberal Party where she was promoted to deputy premier and education minister. "She's done a great job and B.C.is No. 1".

"Today, I informed my caucus colleagues of my intention to resign as leader of the BC Liberal Party effective Friday, August 4".

"Together, we have achieved so much - winning a comeback election victory that nearly nobody thought possible, positioning British Columbia firmly as Canada's leading economy, and laying a strong foundation for future generations to achieve their dreams here", she said. Her leadership and willingness to work across party lines on this vital issue has made universities and colleges across this province safer for our students - and for this I am grateful.

She sacrificed her future political ambition and goals for the long-term health and vitality of her party.

Former Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, who retired before the May election, tweeted out his support for Clark's decision.

"I'm shocked, and I think it's sad that B.C. doesn't get to have the benefit of Christy Clark for another few more years", he said, speaking to the Canadian Press by phone from Cranbrook.

"I think she found a whole lot more time for her son and her family, as a result of this period of time, and reflected about what was really important", Coleman said.

She was known for pursuing resource projects like the Site C dam and LNG development.

But there were also a number of scandals, including the deaths of kids in government care, triple-deleted emails and firings at the Ministry of Health. There was also criticism over political fundraising practices in B.C.

But she couldn't pull off a majority government in the election this May, winning just 43 of the 87 seats in the legislature for a minority government.

Rustad says the caucus decided Coleman has the right experience in opposition, as well as in government, to do the job. The Greens and the NDP signed a confidence and supply agreement and the Liberals were defeated in a non-confidence vote.

Liberal caucus members praised Ms. Clark on Friday, but the party will now face the necessity of picking a new leader to face the BC NDP government.
