A US military official Tuesday said an Iranian drone flew about 100 feet from an American fighter jet in the Persian Gulf in a potentially unsafe incident.

While the drone was within 100 feet of the jet vertically, it was about 200 feet away from the aircraft. The Navy did not believe that the drone was armed. It did eventually move off.

A statement released by the military's Central Command said that despite repeated radio calls demanding that Iran keep the drone clear of American flight operations in the vicinity of the aircraft carrier Nimitz, the Iranian vehicle came within 100 feet of the fighter jet, which had to swerve to avoid a collision.

"The unsafe maneuver by the QOM-1 [drone] in the known vicinity of fixed wing flight operations and at coincident altitude with operating aircraft created a collision hazard and is not in keeping with worldwide maritime customs and laws", the CENTCOM statement said.
