Arsenal duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud then converted their kicks in succession to ensure the north London club started the new season just as it finished the last one - by beating Chelsea at Wembley.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said his side were left "frustrated and angry" by refereeing decisions as his Premier League champions lost the Community Shield against Arsenal at Wembley on Sunday.

Arsenal have beaten Chelsea on the last two occasions the pair have met at Wembley, with the Gunners winning last season's FA Cup Final 2-1 and also picking up a 1-0 win in the 2015 Community Shield.

Victory for Arsene Wenger's men means the Shield has seen the FA Cup victor beat the defending Premier League champion for four consecutive seasons.

But, Chelsea had Pedro sent off for a rash challenge on Mohamed Elneny and Arsenal substitute Sead Kolasinac, on his competitive bow, scored a header from the resulting free-kick with eight minutes remaining.

"We had a tough pre-season, between the six days until we start the league it is important to be focused on the next game".

"It's down for us to keep a positive atmosphere around the team", said Wenger, who dithered over his own future before signing a new two-season contract after the FA Cup success. "We had some hard moments at the start of the second half but after [that] we dominated the game". For the Blues it looks like it stops about half way down in juxtaposition to Arsenal. "We want to be united and together through the season and hopefully we can be happy at the end of the season".

"If you look at the Premier League there are ten teams that can win it - we need to maintain our togetherness". "I didn't see the situation".

After a strong first half, Arsenal fell behind to a Victor Moses goal in the 46th minute.

Jose Mourinho would love to add Gareth Bale to his Manchester United team this summer, according to ESPN FC insider David Amoyal. But the delay over the move highlights the struggles Mourinho's side have encountered getting deals over the line this summer.

"A lot of people have told me that the penalty was clear so there is frustration but we have to respect the referee's decision". This is the second game, after the FA Cup [final], that we finish with 10 men.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was unhappy with the referee's decision to red-card Pedro.

"We might go through some very good periods and some not so good periods".

Chelsea have lost their last four Community Shield matches, last winning the trophy on penalties in 2009.

Thirteen of the 25 winners of the Premier League since 1992 have been teams who started the same season by contesting the Community Shield.

Conte refused to be drawn on either the red card incident or Willian's booking for simulation in the penalty area before half-time, claiming not to have seen either flashpoint clearly.

Kolasinac became the first player to open his goalscoring account for Arsenal in the Community Shield since Gilberto Silva in 2002.

Defending champions Chelsea meet Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (15:00).
