A dozen inmates at an Alabama jail tricked a young jailer into opening a door to the outside by using peanut butter to cover a door number, Walker County Sheriff James Underwood said during a news conference on Monday.

Underwood says changing numbers on doors with peanut butter "may sound insane, but these people are insane like a fox". You've got to stay on your toes.

According to Sheriff Jim Underwood, the inmates had the cunning of a fox. "It was a human error that caused this to happen", he added.

Twelve prisoners went on the run from the Walker County Jail, in Jasper, the office said, but 11 have since been captured.

Underwood said this is the first time inmates escaped while he is in charge of the jail.

The inmates threw a blanket over the barbed wire fence, which was about 15-feet high, Underwood said.

Those who escaped were taken back to jail. Underwood hopes to find the final fugitive, 24-year-old Bradley Andrew Kilpatrick, as soon as possible. Others who helped them after they escaped will also be charged.

The almost 20-year-old facility now has 240 inmates, Underwood said.

The sheriff did acknowledge the jail needed improvements, including more monitors and cameras.

'This young man was a weak link, and they knew it, ' he said. Hundreds of law enforcement officers swarmed neighborhood streets in a manhunt that lasted for three weeks.

Most of whom were found in the Jasper area, Underwood said.
