A man has been arrested in connection to the murder of a woman aboard a cruise ship off the coast of Alaska, police say, in what has been described as a "domestic disturbance".

According to multiple news sources, the FBI is investigating the death of a 39-year-old woman from Utah aboard the Emerald Princess operated by Princess Cruises in Alaska.

Passengers told the news outlet they were placed on an hours-long lockdown as the ship was diverted to Juneau, Alaska, to meet with authorities. "They will be embarking the ship when it arrives in Juneau this morning", Burkholtz wrote in a statement.

The death occurred in United States waters off the coast of Alaska on Tuesday night around 9pm.

Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Staci Feger-Pellessier said an agency team was headed to Alaska's capital city of Juneau and that, as of Wednesday morning, no arrests had been made.

The FBI is the lead investigating agency in the case.

Details of the death remain a mystery. The ship docked in Juneau, Alaska, on Wednesday morning.

Court documents say a man entered the cabin and saw the woman on the floor covered in blood. Most were wearing white and gray hooded sweat shirts. The FBI is involved because the death occurred in USA waters.

Princess Cruises spokeswoman Negin Kamali says conversations are underway to offer passengers some compensation for lost time, such as providing credits for shore excursions.
