"The EU itself estimates that 90 percent of global growth in the next decade will come from outside Europe", he said, "and I believe as the head of an worldwide economic department that this is an exciting opportunity for the work even more closely with our largest single trading partner, the U.S".

DONALD TRUMP today promised to strike a "major trade deal" with Britain in the latest boost to the UK's fortunes after Brexit.

But these guarantees are now looking flimsier by the day as Trade Secretary Liam Fox this week discusses a possible future US-UK trade deal with US officials in Washington.

As Samuel Lowe, a trade expert at the charity Friends of the Earth, explained in a blog in March, any trade deal with the USA would aim to make regulations in America and Britain more similar to each other.

"If the International Trade Secretary wants the public to trust him, he needs to take the opportunity while he's in the US and devour a chlorine-washed chicken live on camera", said Open Britain's executive director, James McGrory, according to The Independent.

Writing in the Observer on Sunday, he warned against striking a quick, comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) with the US.

The overwhelming majority of firms at an Institute of Directors (IoD) event on Brexit said they had given serious consideration to having a "dual location" to meet the challenges of the departure of the United Kingdom from the EU.

In a late-night tweet, Mr Trump said that in the wake of the tour he was confident about the future of US-UK relations.

"UK jeopardises citizens' rights by remaining silent on other key issues", he said.

Lib Dem leader Vince Cable said the President's remarks should be taken "with a pinch of salt" - but admitted that a deal with the United States would be good for Britain.

"We have begun to look at our continuity agreements to maintain as open and flexible relationship as we can", Fox told the American Enterprise Institute think tank earlier on Monday. Back in London, May's spokesman, James Slack, said the report was premature and that any trade deal must work for farmers, consumers and businesses.

Campaign group Open Britain threw down the gauntlet to the worldwide trade secretary after he cast doubt on whether Britain would continue to adhere to European Union rules banning imports of chlorinated chicken after Brexit. Both the US Department of Agriculture and European Union food safety regulator EFSA have said it is safe to eat in moderation.
