Whitehead was arrested on the shoplifting charge on June 22, according to police records, but head coach Jason Garrett said he didn't know about the incident until it was first reported today by TMZ.

Whitehead, 25, was reportedly charged with misdemeanor larceny for shoplifting in Virginia on June 22 and then was charged for failing to appear for his July 6 court date. He has another court date on August 10, now facing an additional charge of failure to appear.

The writing was on the wall a bit as far as Whitehead's roster spot, as the Cowboys spent a draft pick on receiver/returner Ryan Switzer. The dog was eventually returned to Whitehead. However, both Whitehead and his agent, David Rich, deny the crime and state it was an instance of mistaken identity.

This arrest is the latest in a string of off-field issues for the Cowboys since the season ended.

With league punishment yet to be handed down, this won't be the last of the Cowboys' off-field antics we hear about... In a statement to ESPN.com, Rich said that Whitehead wasn't even in the Virginia area at the time of the incident.

Whitehead only has nine catches in his two-year career with the Cowboys, which might explain why Garrett and the Cowboys are adopting this hardline stance. Rapoport reported that he reviewed Whitehead's flight records from the day he was reportedly arrested, with Whitehead flying out of Dulles International Airport in Washington to Dallas only six hours after his arrest. Star running back Ezekiel Elliott was involved in a bar fight in Dallas last week, but wasn't named in the police report. The running back also is awaiting possible punishment from the National Football League stemming from an alleged domestic violence incident last July in Columbus, Ohio.
