Kerala Congress MLA M.Vincent arrested on rape charge

Kerala Congress legislator M Vincent has been arrested from Thiruvananthapuram for allegedly raping, stalking, and abetment of suicide of a 51-year-old woman. The police did not arrest Thrissur Councilor even though there was the woman's statement. The MLA could be charged under more sections, including that for sexual harassment, if she concurs with her husband's complaint, the Hindu reported. The Kovalam MLA was taken into custody after five hours of questioning at the MLA hostel in Thiruvananthapuram.

Protests were staged against Vincent at the Neyyattinkara Taluk Hospital, where he was brought for a medical examination. Known for his "clean" image, Vincent started his political career in the KSU - the Congress' student wing - and was a popular face in the state capital. "I'm the victim of a CPM conspiracy". The pressure from the chief minister's office is behind his arrest, Vincent claimed. A magistrate also recorded her statement at the hospital.

Police had registered an abatement of suicide case against Vincent after the woman's husband filed a complaint with police.

Meanwhile, Vincent has alleged that a local CPI (M) leader was at the woman's house when she attempted suicide, and that she was brought to the hospital in his vehicle, said a report. Initially, a case of abetment of suicide was filed against him. On Thursday, police made a decision to book the MLA for rape after recording the statement of the complainant but had to wait for the Speaker's permission before taking the MLA into custody.

Congress state president M M Hassan said the party would initiate action against the MLA if he is pronounced guilty by a court.

Vincent, who represents the Kovalam constituency, is likely to resign from the assembly while the Congress Party said it would take necessary action against him.
