Box Office Weekend: Apes Best Wall Crawler to Take Box Office

In 2011, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" relaunched the damn dirty ape franchise and beat expectations with a solid $54.8 million debut.

Despite the top two films pulling in a little over $100 million between them, the 2017 summer box office limped along as audience resistance to sequels, prequels and reboots continued to keep business on the slow side.

The weekend's other new new offering: Wish Upon, DOA with an estimated $5.5-M from 2,250 theaters to place #7. That film opened with weekend sales of $72.6 million in North America, according to Box Office Mojo. Critics were equally as generous, with the third Apes movie now sitting at 95% fresh (189 fresh, 11 rotten) on Rotten Tomatoes.

"War", directed by Matt Reeves, tells the continuing story of how intelligent primate Caesar (Andy Serkis) and other apes battle the forces led by an evil human dictator (Woody Harrelson). From an underrated, strong score for the previous film, his composition for War is a step up in every way and, without wanting to sound hyperbolic, establishes itself quickly as one of his greatest pieces of work to date. Worldwide, the movie has brought in $102 million and has taken the throne, this weekend, which was previously held by "Spider-Man: Homecoming'".

Could this be the weekend the box office needs badly - on a roll following Spider-Man's romp last weekend?
