Teen arrested after five acid attacks in London in 90 minutes

Police investigating the incidents have charged a 16-year-old boy with 15 offences, including robbery and "possession of an item to discharge a noxious substance".

Cressida Dick, head of Scotland Yard, branded such attacks as "completely barbaric", telling LBC: "The acid can cause horrendous injuries; the ones last night involved a series of robberies we believe are linked - I am glad to see we have arrested somebody".

Police say that upward trend of attacks has continued this year.

Following this incident, a corrosive substance was reported to have been thrown in the face of another man by two males on a moped in Shoreditch High Street.

"The males threw a corrosive substance in the victim's face, with one stealing his moped and the other making off on the moped they arrived on".

The attacks were reported to police over a 72-minute period, with four taking place in the eastern borough of Hackney and one in the northern borough of Islington. Two men driving a moped approached a man also on a moped waiting in traffic and threw acid at his face.

The man was taken to hospital; his injuries are not being treated as life-threatening or life-changing.

Five separate male victims - all on mopeds - were allegedly targeted by two moped-riding attackers. The first victim had the acid thrown into his face shortly before one of the suspects jumped onto his scooter and sped away.

He was rushed to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life changing.

The attack comes less than a month after a man threw acid through a auto window into the faces of two Muslims in London. They stole his moped and made off.

The Home Office said it will work with police and the Ministry of Justice to assess whether sentencing powers available to the courts are sufficient. Police had cordoned off the little area around the pavement and there was just a guy standing on my doorway and they were pouring huge, five-litre bottles of water over his head.

The Met said in a statement: "Inquiries are ongoing and officers from Hackney are now trying to trace the suspects concerned".
