It will take multiple attacks from multiple riders to unsettle race leader and defending champion Chris Froome in Thursday's 12th stage of the Tour de France in the Pyrenees, according to three-time champion Greg LeMond.

Adventurous escapee Maciej Bodnar, who left his breakaway companions behind with 23km to go, fell 500m short of a fairytale win when he was swallowed up by a surging peloton.

Chris Froome maintained overall his lead of 15 seconds ahead of his closest rival, Astana's Fabio Aru, with Romain Bardet (51 seconds behind Froome) and Rigoberto Uran (55 seconds) still third and fourth respectively.

Britain's Daniel McLay finished fifth in the stage, with compatriot Ben Swift in ninth.

"It's incredible because. you know sometimes when you're on your top level in the sprints, it's like playing Tetris", Kittel said. All too soon the gap dropped under 10 seconds, and it seemed the game was up. It's changed his focus from stage wins, to the general classification.

Boasson Hagen raised his arms as if he had won but was comprehensively beaten by Kittel and Groenewegen after 203.5km from Eymet. "I can just keep going".

It provoked Bodnar to go solo, with the Polish rider bravely holding off the field until the final 250 metres of racing.
