New Jersey Transit Train Derails in NY at Penn Station

The rush hour commute into NY got off to a quiet start Monday as workers began two months of repairs at the country's busiest train station, a project that Gov. Andrew Cuomo predicts will make for a "summer of hell".

Commuters complained that a 7:22 a.m., train from Mount Olive was overcrowded by the time it reached South Orange because it had single level cars, which officials will try and replace with multilevel cars, Ingoglia said. She also wants to audit the state's Transportation Trust Fund to find any alternative sources of funding and divert NY tax revenue collected from New Jersey residents to help fund projects in New Jersey.

All three canceled some services, rerouted others, and warned travelers to expect delays throughout the duration of the repairs, which began on Monday and are scheduled to be done September 1.

"The closure of multiple New York Penn Station tracks to NJ Transit trains will have a severe impact on the lives of tens of thousands of New Jersey commuters", said state Sen. More buses will be added from Hoboken as well. "Everybody's just bumping into each other, pushing each other, to get to their destination".

After a smooth start early Monday, the halls leading from New Jersey Transit trains to PATH trains in Hoboken were packed for over an hour. "We have to survive, '" Codey said.

Amtrak also is reducing the number of trains it runs between NY and Washington and diverting some trains from Albany across town to Grand Central Terminal.

"It's hard to imagine Amtrak, the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit doing a good job, but from my limited vantage point things seem to be running relatively smoothly", said Howard Bernstein, an attorney from Long Beach on Long Island who took the Long Island Rail Road to Manhattan to transfer to a PATH train to his job in Jersey City.

"It was crowded", she said.

Getting into the city had already been problematic for those who live in the suburbs and in some cases made worse by service interruptions in the city's creaky subway system.

New Jersey Transit spokesman Charles Ingoglia (ihn-GOH'-lee-uh) says the agency would like to think it's quiet because "a lot of people did their homework".

But he conceded that the evening rush could be more dramatic, as commuters tend to travel out of the city in a tighter time window.

After several recent train derailments, major track repairs at Penn Station are scheduled for the next two months. To minimize disruption to the commuter services, Amtrak historically has done most of the track work overnight and on weekends.
