"Should be operating next week", Musk wrote, while providing a glimpse of an elevator shaft that will take cars into the depths of his tunnel system.

Elon Musk's plan to build a network of tunnels under major cities and eradicate traffic has gotten underway in Los Angeles, the SpaceX entrepreneur has announced.

Musk's ultimate goal is to relieve congestion by building as many as 30 layers of tunnels beneath Interstate 105 in Los Angeles. Musk stated in a tweet that it would be operational by next week.

In case you missed Musk's big reveal for The Boring Company's vision, the basic idea is that surface access points will allow cars and other vehicles to drive on to elevator panels from regular surface routes. Musk has said that The Boring Company occupies a tiny fraction of his time vs. his work with SpaceX and Tesla, but he's clearly now very hyped on the idea of subterranean solutions. According to Musk, we're "no longer waiting for Godot".

Interstate 45 Shut Down, Pigs on Road After Semi Crash in Wilmer

The billionaire tech visionary tweeted late Wednesday that his "Godot" tunneling machine had "begun boring and just completed the first segment of tunnel in LA". Part of that was designing Godot to do continuous digging and reinforcing of the tunnel walls, and beefing up the power of the machine. Musk has said the tunnels would transport cars on an electric skate and could even accommodate a Hyperloop. In April, the Boring Company released an animated concept video on YouTube to show how the tunnels would work. When the video was released, the website for the Boring Company went live.

Interest in the Model 3 has not let-up since the electric vehicle was first announced by Elon Musk during a keynote presentation past year.

Here are renderings of the planned tunnels and high speed sled system.

Musk said the tunnels should help people get "from Westwood to LAX in 5-6 minutes".
