Small plane crashes on 405 Freeway near John Wayne Airport; 2 injured

KABC is reporting at least two people suffered critical injuries.

The Cessna 310 aircraft crash-landed just after 9:30 a.m. P.S.T. and burst into flames, reports indicate.

The plane crashed into the highway's center divider and shut down traffic going in both directions. The tower offers the Cessna right traffic for 20R shortly before the plane crashed northeast of the airport-either on a left base for 20R or right base having overshot the centerline.

The occupants have traumatic injuries, Orange County fire officials told local ABC station KABC-TV.

Drivers stopped to help the people out of the plane. The wreckage saw strewn across several lanes of the freeway, he said.

"Essentially tried to get control of my vehicle, checked my passenger to make sure he was OK, gave each other a hug that we were still alive", he said.

It's incredible more people were not injured or killed, really. They show the plane in flames, emergency teams rushing to the scene, and the plane's passengers after they were evacuated. Arrivals were halted at the airport for about 45 minutes after the crash.

John Wayne Airport tweeted that the nearby freeway has been closed in both directions "due to debris on the roadway". The National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the crash.
