E3 2017: Microsoft isn't making a profit on the Xbox One X

The console isn't even able to pre-order yet because it needs to be approved from FCC first, but this hasn't stopped Microsoft from showing the console and its games at E3. When asked if each unit sold would result in lost profit for Microsoft, Spencer stated "I didn't answer it that way".

Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox for Microsoft, sat down with Eurogamer at the Galen Center in Los Angeles to discuss the reveal. "We had 42 games, 22 of them with console exclusivity that I could put on-stage that all are games where you could see the dates for them and when they're coming", Spencer said. "I look at Pro as more of a competitor to S than I do to Xbox One X", Spencer said. Eventually, the cost of making the console will decrease and its profit will increase.

The $499 price of the Xbox One X makes it the most expensive current-generation console in the market, with some gamers claiming that the price is too steep.

The Xbox One X also has a superior optical drive, as the new unit comes equipped with a 4K/HDR capable Blu-ray drive, compared to the PlayStation 4 Pro which comes with an older Blu-ray/DVD drive.

So far, there are around 390 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One, but only two original Xbox games were announced.

The Xbox Backwards Compatibility for the Xbox One will drop later this year - but it will NOT be as extensive as Xbox 360 backwards compatibility lineup. Microsoft's new console also comes with 12 GB of RAM, compared to only 8 GB for Sony's premium device. Microsoft could soon be making money from Xbox One X sales, but how long that will take is now unclear.

The price tag of $499 is actually right on the money for many analysts, as the price is what many predicted for the Xbox One X. The question, however, is whether gamers will be willing to pay that price, especially considering the lack of exclusives for the Xbox One compared to the PlayStation 4.
