You can walk around the Eiffel Tower, dive to the bottom of the Great Barrier Reef, or get a new perspective by meeting people face-to-face in a way that isn't possible with a flat view of the world.

An interesting new initiative with the backing of camera hardware makers concerns the new VR180 format.

Videos uploaded to YouTube using the new format will be viewable on screens and in headsets where the YouTube VR app is available. With the new technology, dubbed YouTube VR180, Google is looking to capture 180-degree images in 3D to make it easier for non-VR viewers to watch them.

The devices coming out for VR180 are not targeted on professionals, Google is eying normal consumers who would buy them and use the video format for rendering VR friendly videos. The videos transition to a VR experience when viewed with Cardboard, Daydream, and PSVR.

YouTube's new VR180 video format bridges the gap between 2D and VR, and it's going to be a big deal.
