GOP chugs along in its efforts to dismantle Obamacare

He thought the House overhaul was "terrific", because Paul Ryan told him so.

That new bill is being crafted in private by the Senate's Republicans.

After a dismal first-effort failure in the House of Representatives to repeal so-called Obamacare, and some political side-stepping to finally push through a replacement bill, the Senate apparently is drafting its own version of the health-coverage program, with only a handful of senators knowing what the bill would likely do, or how it would be financed.

Some Republican senators and aides are downplaying the lack of clarity so far, insisting that it reflects the reality that the bill is still being written. With reports that the Senate wants to fast-track a vote before Independence Day, no one in the American public knows what may be on the table.

But Trump made clear that the Senate needs to pass a bill that Republicans are able to more easily defend and is not viewed as an attack on low-income Americans as the House bill has been portrayed by critics, Politico reported.

Some who will help determine whether the GOP can pass a bill without any Democratic support say they're missing a chance to guide and shape it.

Their descriptions of Trump's words differed slightly and they said the president did not specify what aspects of the bill he was characterizing.

Trump's comments were described by people who received accounts of a White House lunch Trump had Tuesday with 15 GOP senators.

"Dozens of Republican amendments were offered and accepted in that hearing process" around the Affordable Care Act (ACA), said Senator Claire McCaskill during a hearing with Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price last week.

In an embarrassing retreat, Ryan had to abruptly cancel a March vote on the House measure after a revolt against it by Republican conservatives and moderates that would have ensured its defeat. "He talked about making sure that we have a bill that protects people with preexisting conditions".

The AHCA would repeal most of Obamacare's taxes in 2017 while retaining the 0.9 percent Medicare surtax on wealthy Americans until 2023 and delay the implementation of the "Cadillac tax" on high-cost health care plans until 2026. "You couldn't have a more partisan process than what you're engaged in right now".

"Today Trump held a meeting at the White House on Obamacare as senators worked secretly behind closed doors to write a bill that could take health insurance away from 23 million Americans", "Late Night" host Seth Meyers opened on Tuesday's "Closer Look".

Just last weekend, Trump used his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., to hold a fundraising event for MacArthur that netted $800,000.

CNN reporter Jim Acosta later tweeted that Trump also called the bill a "son of a bitch", according to a source. He previously described the bill as "incredibly well crafted". But our members are still having a conversation about if we want to make changes that are in the end going to require some additional revenue where that might come from. "I'm exhausted of Republicans promising they would repeal Obamacare and then negotiating to keep it".
