"Our government does not intend to fundamentally change what was promised under the Korea-U.S. alliance", South Korean President's national security adviser Chung Eui-yong said, as quoted by Korean news agency Yonhap, adding that the government is "fully aware of North Korea's nuclear and missile threats".

The same year, South Korea said that it had found three alleged North Korean drones in border towns.

It marked the fifth missile test-fire by the North since liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in took office May 10.

The North's missile tests present a hard challenge to new South Korean President Moon Jae-in, a liberal elected last month who has expressed a desire to reach out to Pyongyang.

Last month, North Korea premiered a powerful new midrange missile that outside experts said flew higher than any other missile it has tested.

"During the launching preparation process, such specifications were also examined and confirmed as the mobility and entry into combatant position of newly developed caterpillar self-propelled launching pad vehicle, rapid-firing preparation and reliability of operation of the launching and controlling systems", the report said.

The future of the program has been uncertain since South Korea announced the suspension.

North Korea has reliable short- and mid-range ballistic missiles, and its new intermediate-range ballistic missile has a range just short of an intercontinental ballistic missile and could comfortably hit Guam.

"If Japan is concerned about its security, it should not act (as) a poodle of the United States but withdraw its hostile policy toward the DPRK and remove the United States military bases for aggression (sic) from its territory", the statement said.

North Korea's claim of victory has not be independently verified. "These provocative actions are intolerable", he said.

Thursday's launches came after two US aircraft carriers deployed to waters off the Korean Peninsula as a show of force, recently left the Sea of Japan after holding joint exercises with Self-Defense Forces ships and fighter jets.

The launch comes less than a week after the United Nations expanded sanctions against Kim Jong-un's regime.

The device would be the latest of several North Korean drones to have flown into the South, with which Pyongyang is technically at war after the Korean war ended in a truce, rather than a peace treaty, in 1953. North Korea fired several suspected short-range anti.

The sanctions also extend a travel ban and asset freeze on high-level North Korean officials and state entities that deal with the program.

The type of anti-ship cruise missile that North Korea tested on June 9 is created to fly at a low altitude, making it a potent weapon against ships.
