Emirates Team New Zealand notched up their third successive win in as many races against defending champions Oracle Team USA to go 2-0 up in the America's Cup final on Sunday.

But Spithill, trying to pilot the U.S. to a third straight America's Cup title, was seconds early across the startline of race one and the Americans never recovered from the penalty, as Team New Zealand erased the United States boat's one-point advantage to level overall at 0-0.

But the Kiwis later came off their foils during a hard maneuver and slowed dramatically in the tough conditions, losing half their lead.

Peter Burling, helmsman for Emirates Team New Zealand, left, and teammate skipper Glenn Ashby react after winning the second race against Oracle Team USA during America's Cup match sailing competition Saturday, June 17, 2017, in the Great Sound of Bermuda.

Team USA must find a solution to the superior upwind speed of Team NZ's catamaran and devise a way to rattle helmsman Burling, who has been flawless with his starts and decision-making so far, nullifying the proven match-racing ability of Spithill.

"I think the question is, imagine if these guys lost from here", Spithill said, glancing at then-Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker.

The Kiwi challengers are 3-0 ahead in the race to seven points, having dominated all four races of the Cup Match after starting one point behind. "We're obviously disappointed with what was a tough day, but the deficit is only one point so we we're not panicking", said a defiant Spithill. Races three and four are on Sunday.

Coutts has been the CEO of Oracle Team USA since it beat Alinghi in 2010.

The always-crafty Kiwis are using a "cyclor" grinding system. During tacks and gybes, the cyclists unclip, run across the trampoline to the other hull and clip back in, powering the hydraulic systems that control the wingsail and raise and lower the daggerboards.

Burling, who has won Olympic gold and silver medals with grinder Blair Tuke, again appeared unflappable.

A win by New Zealand could threaten France's continued sponsorship by French insurance group Groupama as the Kiwis have not signed up to a framework agreement that was created to ensure continuity for the competition.

"I'm pretty sure Groupama won't go if the Kiwis win so we have to change out proposal". "I thought we were faster than yesterday but unfortunately it's just not enough".

Oracle made an unforced error when its 50-foot catamaran came off its foils early on the downwind second leg.
