After playing partner Jonathan Randolph made a longer putt for bogey 6, Thomas' eagle putt was center-cut for history.

Thomas raced to the turn in 31 blows after circling birdies at 1, 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9 against a single bogey at 5.

Miller famously set the record at the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont, and it has stood ever since.

His ball ended up just over six-feet away, and Thomas looked likely to gain the outright lead with an eagle.

England's Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood shared the lead on seven under par alongside American duo Brooks Koepka and Brian Harman, the first four-way tie after 36 holes since 1974.

Thomas played his college golf at Alabama, and one Twitter user challenged his choice of what seemed to be a very Auburn-esque orange shirt for Sunday. Once again he called after his three-wood, this time to his caddie.

During his historic Saturday run to get himself at the top of the leaderboard at the US Open, the 24-year-old used some of his skills he must have acquired from mini-putt at the par-4 fifth hole at Erin Hills.

"All we were trying to do was give ourselves a best chance to make a four, get out of there and post a great number, so those things are bonuses".

"I couldn't hit it [the approach] any better if I tried".

Justin Thomas, please take a bow...or two.

It may have been just Saturday at the US Open, but Thomas will more than likely be up there in one of, if not the final group tomorrow. "And I wouldn't have been able to do that without that rain last night, so I guess I'm thankful for that". But Thomas was quick to say that he'd never go there.
