Investigators are also considering the conversations Comey and the president had leading up to that point.

Ever since Chris Ruddy, CEO of the conservative news outlet Newsmax, publicly stated that President Trump is contemplating firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Washington has seemingly been spinning in overdrive.

Trump can not directly dismiss Mueller.

At the time, Sessions said he was recusing himself only because he was involved in the 2016 campaign as an adviser to the Trump campaign.

Special counsel #Robert Mueller has expanded the scope of the #Russian investigation beyond the interference in the 2016 election.

Collins' question was prompted by recent media reports that Mueller's role leading the DOJ's Russian Federation investigation could be in jeopardy.

In the most famous presidential investigation, Watergate, Archibald Cox was appointed special prosecutor on May 18, 1973 - by June 5, Nixon was complaining about being attacked by Cox.

"Let me give you a little bit of insight from inside the West Wing right now", Ryan said. Ruddy later confirmed the comment to CNN.

Rosenstein confirmed that because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation probe, Rosenstein is the one who has the authority to hire and fire people.

Trump to announce plan to stop cash flow to Cuban military
The announcement also wouldn't affect Americans who want to travel to Cuba and pay for an Airbnb stay, for example. Trump's approach instead will likely concentrate on restricting travel and trade with the island.

FDA extends compliance deadline for Nutrition Facts panel changes

CHRISTOPHER RUDDY: Well, I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel.

The meeting comes a day after lawmakers questioned Justice Department officials about the probe and Mueller's independence, and after a friend of Trump said the White House was considering firing Mueller.

Rosenstein said that if he fired Mueller, he would be required to explain it in writing. Such a move would create a firestorm coming weeks after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

"I won't mince words, " Leahy told Rosenstein on Tuesday.

"I know I'm not under investigation", Trump told NBC's Lester Holt in a May 11 interview that came just two days after Trump had fired Comey over, according to the President, the FBI director's handling of the Russian Federation investigation.

Rosenstein may be asked to address the issue when he speaks at a Senate subcommittee hearing Tuesday morning.

The White House has denied it put pressure on Mr Comey. "I'm not talking about anything else", Trump added. "With respect to this subject, only the President or his attorneys are authorized to comment".

White House spokesman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that "Chris speaks for himself", while Rep. Adam Schiff, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, took to Twitter for his response.

Look, my position is that Mueller is a man of integrity, but we all know in the history of these special investigations, they go far and wide, and they go well beyond what the original jurisdiction was.
