While analysts expect few major policy shifts from Varadkar and his new cabinet, the new Fine Gael leader has hinted at some changes.

He said Mr Kenny's place in history is assured.

"He is the kind of person who has made me a better person", Varadkar recently said.

In a move created to heal any divisions in his own party, Varadkar on Tuesday appointed the man he defeated, Simon Coveney, as deputy leader of Fine Gael.

"As Ireland's national LGBT+ youth service, we are delighted that the new leader of Fine Gael is a gay man, and now a role model for the youth who use our services across the country".

Addressing the Dail (Irish parliament), after his election, Varadkar said, "I've been elected to lead but I promise to serve".

The new ruling Fine Gael leader won 57 votes in the Irish parliament against 50 for his nomination as premier.

"It is about removing the sense of shame, isolation and humiliation from many who feel excluded".

It has also been confirmed that Mr Varadkar's Department of Social Protection will be "beefed up" to have increased so-called job activation functions.

In a statement after the party meeting, Mr Varadkar paid tribute to his colleague, Mr Coveney.

He added that together they would "guide Fine Gael's role in government and re-energise the party".

Another cousin, Dipti Bhosale, said she was busy contacting all relatives of the joint family in Mumbai to join the festivities at the Borivali home which Varadkar visited in 2011 as an Irish Minister.

A message was posted on Mr Kenny's Twitter feed to say the stop-off was to assure the community he is moving on but the Government remains committed to regeneration.

Mr Varadkar was appointed with the support of 58 TDs including Fine Gael, the Independent Alliance, two Independent Ministers and Independent TD Michael Lowry.

Regina Doherty and Eoghan Murphy are the two other names being tipped for promotion, while Paschal Donohoe is nearly certain to take the reins in finance.
