South Korea names new unification minister to handle N.Korea ties

Vietnam last Friday lodged a protest with the South Korean Embassy regarding President Moon Jae-in's recent remarks, according to Vietnam's foreign ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang.

South Korea's new President Moon Jae-in nominated Cho Myoung-gyon, former director general for Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation, as the unification minister and You Young-min, software expert, as the minister for Science, ICT, and Future Planning.

Thousands of US troops are based in South Korea, and the Demilitarized Zone between the North and South is one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world.

Moon explained that South Korea must keep up with sanctions and pressure, but at the same time show its northern neighbor that once Pyongyang ends the nuclear program, it will receive help from Seoul.

The North Korea official news agency on Saturday indicated Pyongyang is close to testing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that could potentially reach the USA mainland.

Moon, who suggested during his successful campaign for a May 9 election that he could try to renegotiate the deal, also said the two countries should not "cling to past history" only to block other developments in their ties.

There was no immediate response from North Korea.

South Korea, of course, successfully co-hosted the 2002 World Cup with neighbours Japan, making it all the way to the semi-finals.

Nearly all of the hermit state's national team play for clubs in North Korea, given the difficulties of escaping the communist kingdom.
