Pena Nieto says he hopes a "global" agreement between Mexico and the European Union could be finalized by year's end.

On Rodriguez's Twitter account, the top diplomat said that Venezuela repudiates statements made by Merkel from Argentina during her Latin American tour, which "promotes opposition violence in the country" that has, since April, led to 81 people killed and over than 1,200 injured.

"We will try to defend the interests of our 27 members states, and Great Britain will defend its own interests", Merkel said in Mexico City on Friday after meeting with President Enrique Pena Nieto. In response to reporters' questions, Merkel said she's concerned both about Venezuela and the situation with Qatar.

Germany's Chancellor said she wanted to get to work quickly on talks over Britain's separation from the European Union and was ready for the negotiations to start on 19 June.

Malcorra said the retreat of the United States from trade talks had opened a window for the European Union to become a strong player in multilateral, region-to-region accords.

"Negotiating a free trade agreement is always a hard matter".

"We don't know when Brexit talks start".

States form Climate Alliance to meet Paris Goals

In recent weeks, as Trump has attacked Germany for its trade surplus with the US and for not spending enough on defense to meet its commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Merkel has said that Europe "can no longer rely" on its longtime ally, the United States.

Merkel said such compromises would have to be carefully negotiated and would likely be painful for both sides.

"I am optimistic", Macri told the news conference.

Earlier this year Mrs Merkel attacked Mrs May's Brexit plans as "an illusion" as tension ratcheted ahead of the negotiations' start.

Merkel stated that her Argentina visit comes after Macri helped his country end a legal row that made it return to global credit markets after nearly 15 years.

Merkel told Macri that she "values very much" Argentina's commitment to the Paris climate treaty, a pointed contrast to her response that Trump's decision was "extremely regrettable".
