"You have to be kidding me?!: Terror attacks are part of living in big city, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan", he tweeted.

Trump later branded Khan's statement on the terror attack as a "pathetic excuse".

British Prime Minister Theresa May was among those who came to Khan's defence, though she declined to criticise Trump over the row.

That's what London's mayor is calling the three men allegedly responsible for using a white van to mow down pedestrians on London Bridge Saturday night, and for stabbing several people in a nearby market. Police shot and killed the three attackers, who were wearing fake bomb vests.

Boris Johnson has confirmed the numbers of armed police had been slashed as the debate over policing in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack continues.

Khan has kept his focus on the investigation surrounding the recent attack and, to his credit, ignored the tasteless jibes. Khan's spokesman said he was too busy to respond to Trump's "ill-informed" tweet. Mainstream outlets and British officials criticized him for taking Khan's comments out of context, as well as accusations of racism as Khan is a practicing Muslim.

"We've been working with Sadiq Khan".

'We felt sick that they could do it again so soon, we felt anxious for the people here and we just felt that we needed to be here and show our support, ' Ms Campbell said.

Trump said he had spoken with May to express America's "unwavering support" and offer USA assistance as the British government works to protect its citizens and bring the guilty to justice. When asked about Islamist extremists, he said: "What better antidote to the hatred they spew than someone like me being in this position?"

But Trump then took his criticism a step further as he said Khan's excuse was "pathetic". The point is there is a reason to be alarmed.

TRUMP: "We need to be smart, vigilant and tough".

"At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terrorist attack and Mayor of London says there is "no reason to be alarmed!' " Trump tweeted Sunday morning, misrepresenting a comment the mayor made over the weekend when he told the city's residents to not be alarmed by an increased police presence in the coming days".

Trump and Khan, the son of Pakistani immigrants and the first Muslim elected as London's mayor, have been at odds since Khan denounced as "ignorant" Trump's campaign pledge to impose a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States.

Tim Farron, leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats, called on May on Monday to cancel the state visit, saying Trump was insulting Britain's values "at a time of introspection and mourning".
