Bridge collapses in Goa village, several people fall in river

The Portuguese-era footbridge connecting Sanvordem and Curchorem villages in South Goa district had collapsed on Thursday afternoon under the weight of the crowd who were watching a man trying to commit suicide at Sanvordem.

The accident took place immediately after the gathering of around 50 people arrived at bridge to look for a man who committed suicide by jumping off the river few minutes ago.

"A metallic old bridge on the river has collapsed where about 40 persons had gathered", Shekhar Prabhudesai, superintendent of police in South Goa, who is heading the rescue operations, told Reuters over phone.

According to police some people managed to swim towards river bank at their own, while others were rescued. The fire and emergency services has begun the search operation. Further details are awaited. Efforts are underway to see if there are any more bodies in the water.

PWD minister Sudin Dhavalikar, who visited the site, said the bridge had been closed for the past four years.

The Indian Navy, whose divers are engaged in search-and-rescue operations, said the operation was resumed on Friday even as crocodiles in the Sanvordem river were creating a hindrance in the efforts.
