The acting pair reprised their now famous roles, with Baldwin impersonating President Trump, and McCarthy the White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, on tonight's episode of the US TV show.

One sketch featured McCarthy as the hot-tempered Spicer commandeering his motorized podium through the streets of midtown Manhattan - a sequence spotted by the media on Friday while it was being filmed.

So how did this year's big political comedy moment come to be? McCarthy's monologue, like the Trump/Spicer sketch, seemed to have "funny" as a secondary goal. From there, we're treated to a Donald Trump nesting doll, with James Comey as Jake the Dog from Adventure Time, Hillary Clinton as Maleficent, Steve Bannon as Slimer, and Jeff Sessions as Pikachu before Spicey travels to NY to talk to her boss.

"I can't go back to the Navy!"

When pressed, Spicey insisted that Trump wouldn't fire him because they were friends. He told me so.

We're not sure what will come first - Trump sending out a tweet about the SNL sketch or Spicer getting axed as Press Secretary. "I fired him because of Russia", Trump/Baldwin said. "Let's make it happen'".

"You're Steve Martin!" said McCarthy.

It's also the number two episode of the season in total viewers, behind only the February 11 edition, which drew 10.8 million and featured host Alec Baldwin, and the number three episode of the season in the key demo, behind only the February 11 episode and the November 12 episode with host Dave Chappelle.

'Oh my god it's Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, what are you guys doing here?' Melissa asked as the couple hugged Joan and wished her a Happy Mother's Day.

There was still a problem.

In the cold open, Alec Baldwin returned as President Trump in a take on a NBC Nightly News interview with Michael Che as host Lester Holt. "I was like, 'Hey!'"

Mr Trump then begins to flirtatiously tickle Mr Spicer, before commanding the other man to kiss him. You could just feel it in the room.

"Thank you for having me here, jazzman". I didn't quite know what to do with the reaction. Trump, on the sacking of now former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey: "I thought, he's investigating Russian Federation, I don't like that, I should fire him".

Then things got even more physical with the latest White House press briefing spoof.

SNL made fun of old people and their conversation skills with a new product called Amazon Echo Silver.

The impersonation still draws viewers.

Melissa McCarthy spiced up this weekend's Saturday Night Live.

After talking with Trump for a while - and being reassured that he had only been asked to lie "since you started working here", the President then told Spicer he wouldn't be replaced because no one has his "special spice".

The press ask Huckabee if she can take over, and imply that President Trump is set to fire Spicer anyway.

Sublette told THR that the show didn't have a shortage of potential "Spicers".
