Like all its rivals, Red Bull has introduced a significant upgrade package for its vehicle this weekend, and Verstappen reckons it has helped the team reduce the gap significantly to Mercedes and Ferrari.

The Australian conceded that the auto was performing better on the soft Pirelli tyre than the medium, and admitted Red Bull would need to extract more from the update before qualifying if it is to challenge Ferrari.

Verstappen qualified less than six tenths behind pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton in Barcelona, having been almost two seconds off the pace in the previous qualifying in Russian Federation.

"It went very smoothly and we had no issues and I think the lap was spot on". "Hopefully we will be closer, but l don't think we can come out and expect to win this weekend". It was a good qualifying.

"To be just under six tenths back from pole position is a good achievement and we should be very happy with that compared to one and a half seconds back in Sochi".

"We can not control that. At the moment we never had the chance for that", he says.

The Dutchman said the upgrades have translated into a huge improvement in the balance of the vehicle and believes the RB13 has got stronger in every area.

"I think everywhere", he said when asked where had the auto improved.

"We are still the third team but the changes are taking us in the right direction and we have found an increase in grip". "My last sector was weak but I'd like to think the high-speed corners were an improvement".

"I think [we are] a little bit happier, but we still need to work very hard to get more pace in the auto and the engine", Verstappen said.

"Well, we had to".

"As always we will keep pushing and try to close the gap even more". Now it's six tenths.

"I'm signing my contract, I'm not signing other people's contract, so it's not my decision", said Vettel.

"There are always a few issues out there, but what we have on the vehicle now will bring us a few tenths", Verstappen told Sky Sports News HQ. The real mechanical side of the auto, you've kind of got what you've got, it's mainly bits which are predominantly aero, sidepods, wings and all that kind of stuff.
