MICROSOFT HAS ANNOUNCED that Windows 10 is now installed on 500 million active devices.

"We're pleased with our progress to date, but due to the focusing of our phone hardware business it will take longer than FY18 for us to reach our goal of one billion monthly active devices", the company said in a statement in July past year. Microsoft did plan to hit a Billion in two-three years initially, however, they backpedalled on that pretty quickly when the company admitted: "it will take longer than FY18 for us to reach our goal of 1 billion monthly active devices". Now, Microsoft is halfway to its goal. Getting halfway has taken almost two years. We also don't quite know Microsoft's definition of "active user".

And this new number might also be a sign that Windows 10 growth is slowing down, at least a little bit.

Windows 10 represents a comeback for Microsoft after a disastrous Windows 8 launch and heavy competition from phone systems such as Apple's iOS and Google's Android. Now, from September to May, it went from 400 million to this new 500 million figure, a rise of 25% over about seven months. Additionally, the Windows 10 update was offered entirely free of cost in the majority of the period until now, hence, the real test actually commences from this point for Microsoft.

So it's not doom-and-gloom for Microsoft or Windows 10. And yes, Microsoft is working on a UWP Azure app for Windows 10 devices.
