S&P, Nasdaq hit record highs as volatility drops

USA stocks were poised to open slightly higher on Tuesday, with market volatility at its lowest in more than two decades following Emmanuel Macron's victory in the French presidential election and strong US corporate earnings.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 36.50 points, or 0.2 percent, to 20,975.78.

May 9 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 fell on Tuesday after edging up to an intra-day record high for the second straight session, while Apple became the first US company to close with a market capitalization above $800 billion.

The S&P 500 rose by less than a point to a new record of 2,399.38, while the Nasdaq finished 0.03% higher to a record close of 6,102. And last weekend's presidential election in France raised confidence that voters may be turning their backs on a nationalistic brand of politics that could hurt global trade. Utilities in the S&P 500 lost 0.9 percent, while telecoms fell 0.6 percent.

Sturm Ruger & Company jumped 9.85 percent, leading other gun makers higher after its quarterly report suggested a drop in demand after Trump's election may be bottoming out. Likewise, the dollar index - which measures the buck against a basket of its peer currencies - is up 0.48 per cent to 99.54. It has been climbing since hitting a low of 2.17 percent three weeks ago.

The Nasdaq is up 19.83 points, or 0.3 percent. Benchmark U.S. crude fell 55 cents to settle at $45.88 per barrel.

CHECKING IN: Marriott International jumped $6.10, or 6.3 percent, to $102.47 after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings for the latest quarter. The hotel operator cited improving trends around the world, from North America to Europe to Asia.

Crude oil sunk 1 percent with prices at $46 per barrel. South Korean markets were closed as votes headed to the polls to vote for president. Brent crude, the worldwide standard, fell 61 cents to $48.73 a barrel.

The euro fell to $1.0869 from $1.0930. US equity markets were hobbled by a downturn in USA crude-oil prices, which fell by 1.2%, to settle at $45.88 a barrel, ending two days of gains for the commodity.

Gold dipped $6.70 to $1,220.40 per ounce, silver fell 10 cents to $16.16 per ounce and copper added a penny to $2.50 per pound.
