Sidney Crosby was checked out by medical personnel but did not go through the NHL's formal concussion protocol after taking a head-first spill into the boards in Game 6 of a second-round playoff series with the Washington Capitals on Monday night.

The Washington Capitals forced a game seven against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League playoffs with a 5-2 win on Monday.

Before the Penguins scored a pair of meaningless third-period goals, the Capitals had outscored Pittsburgh 8-0 going back to the third period of Game 5.

The Caps' goal explosion came courtesy of stars like T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov, who had been criticised at times for playing short of their typically high standards.

Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin scored for Pittsburgh in the third-period, but it was obviously too little too late.

He was the much hotter goaltender than reigning Vezina Trophy victor and again finalist Braden Holtby, who outdueled him in an emotional Game 5 as the Capitals avoided elimination.

This is the fourth time the Penguins and Capitals will meet in a Game 7. So, much of the next 48 hours in Washington could be filled with angst, because what could be more "Caps" than clawing back from a 3-1 deficit in the series to force a seventh game on home ice - only to lose it?

'Monaco have nothing to lose' - Allegri weary over Champions League clash
Before the return game with Monaco, the "old lord" will play in a match of 35 round on Saturday in the Turin derby with Torino. We let in a goal nearly on the counter-attack: [Lionel] Messi hammered a shot on goal, I diverted it and [Luis] Suarez scored.

Not the same kind of player flopping that occurs in, say, the National Basketball Association, and it's certainly not done at the same volume seen in soccer, where diving is used effectively at the highest levels even as it is ridiculed and (occasionally) penalized. "I've said it for four years in Anaheim we're due to win, but in the end your best players have got to be your best players". The Capitals won the game, 5-2, leveling the series at 3-3. "If he decides he wants to go out there and play it's his choice once he is aware of the risk". The Pens did not record a shot on goal from the Capitals' half of the ice until 17:27 had elapsed. They've played in the Olympics in their respective states and the Crosbys have won gold home and away and the Ovechkins have ribbons for participation. In beating the New York Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist to put Ottawa up 3-2 in the series, Turris joined Devin Setoguchi, Martin St. Louis, Niclas Wallin, Danny Gare, Rene Robert and Mel Hill in the record books and passed Daniel Alfredsson for the most in franchise history. Two games ago the Capitals were all but dead and buried, their obituaries prepared (and sometimes even published). Now, we've morphed into a new era: If they ever do it, how?

The Penguins become the first to repeat as Stanley Cup champions since the 1998 Detroit Red Wings. "I think Washington for sure is due to win". During the opening frame, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, playing in his second game after returning from yet another concussion, took an awkward fall headfirst into the boards, but stayed in the game without being subsequently tested for a concussion.

Even Capitals players didn't blame referee Steve Kozari for making the call he thought he saw against Oshie, but center Lars Eller said the only way to prevent those situations is to make embellishment and diving subject to video review. On Tuesday, Crosby told reporters he was in fact examined by a team doctor during the first intermission and didn't have to enter in the concussion protocol. "That's going to be a tough task but I think it's something we have the right guys and the right mentality right now to do that".

On the same power play, Patric Hornqvist got a bloody mouth from a stick on a shot attempt.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan tinkered with his line combinations reuniting the "HBK" line (Carl Hagelin, Nick Bonino and Phil Kessel) that played an instrumental part in the team's Cup run last spring. The Capitals then added two more goals that period, building a commanding 5-0 lead.

NOTES: Pittsburgh D Trevor Daley, who left Game 5 in the third period, did not play because of a lower-body injury.
