"Solicitor general Ranjit Kumar told Supreme Court Monday that in order to tackle the illegal smuggling of cows and other cattle, it (gov't) had accepted the recommendation of an expert group to provide a unique identification number (UIN) for each one", an official said.

In its report, the Centre also highlighted the issue of cow protection and smuggling of cattle across India-Bangladesh border. The report, which was submitted before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud, was prepared by a committee headed by the joint secretary of the home ministry.

The committee suggests that care-taking should continue after the milking age.

The report also made it clear that it will be the responsibility of state governments to ensure the safety of abandoned animals. "Every district should have a shelter home to house at least 500 abandoned animals".

Economic Times reported that animal husbandary department had assigned technical staff for fixing tags with 12 digit unique identification number inside ears of cow.

"Scheme should be launched for farmers in distress so that they do not sell animals that are beyond milking age".
