Tillerson and Lavrov spoke to the press after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in an extended display of U.S.

Speaking in the White House following a meeting with the secretary general of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the USA president said it was "possible" that Russian Federation knew about the chemical attacks in Syria on April 4th.

The US launched 59 cruise missiles on Shayrat airfield and nearby military infrastructure controlled by Syrian regime leader Bashar al Assad last Thursday to retaliate against the chemical weapons attack, that killed over 80 people, many of them children.

One of the main foreign policy goals set out by President Trump after his election in November was a normalization of US-Russia relations.

Mr Trump has voiced caution on his relationship with Mr Putin, and said he would wait and see about future ties with Moscow. "The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this kind of relationship", he said in the news conference, adding that Moscow and Washington had agreed to establish a working group to identify problems and improve bilateral relations.

The White House accused Russian Federation of attempting to "cover up" Assad's use of chemical weapons after the veto motion, after Russian Federation claims there was "no evidence" that Assad forces had carried out the attack.

"The working level of confidence in Russian-American relations, especially at the military level, under the administration of Donald Trump has not improved, but rather worsened", he told MIR. Tillerson said the US was "quite confident" that it "was planned and it was directed and executed by Syrian regime forces".

For Trump, it's a dramatic reversal from his repeated campaign pledges to forge a new U.S. He said the two sides would also discuss disagreements on Syria and how to end the country's six-year civil war.

Lavrov protested that Russian Federation was the victim of "very slanderous attacks", and added: "I have to say once again ... no one has shown us a single fact".

Russian Federation vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding that Bashar al-Assad's government cooperate with an investigation into the deadly toxic gas attack in northern Syria that the US and allies blame on the regime. Secretary Tillerson told President Putin peace can not happen in Syria while Assad is still in power.

"Things will work out fine between the United States of America and Russian Federation. And it was very, very successfully done, as you well know", he said.

"Where is the proof that Syrian troops used chemical weapons?" "I think it is wonderful they abstained", he said.

In response to last week's chemical attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, the United States fired 59 Tomahawk missiles against the Shayrat airfield on Friday, in the country's first strike against the regime since the war broke out six years ago. Trump said it was "certainly possible" though "probably unlikely".
