The NCAA will return events to North Carolina after selecting two sites in the state for championship games in the coming five years. The governors didn't exactly give a ringing endorsement of the passage of HB142, which repealed HB2, as the majority "reluctantly voted" for a bill that "meets the minimal NCAA requirements".

Last week, the ACLU delivered more than 77,000 petition signatures to the NCAA urging the organization to keep events out of North Carolina. Roy Cooper signed a so-called "repeal" of the law, but LGBTQ activists criticized the new legislation has having "doubled down" on discrimination. 'HB 142 also says that local governments can not pass ordinances protecting LGBT people - or anyone else - from discrimination in employment or public places until 2020'.

In 2016, the NCAA pulled championships from the state in protest of HB2, the anti-trans bathroom bill. The NCAA also announced the women's tournament will return to Greensboro in 2019.

The North Carolina bench erupts into celebration after their win the NCAA Final game against Gonzaga in Phoenix. It's announced which cities will host college championships through 2022. "And this new law restores the state to that legal landscape: a landscape similar to other jurisdictions presently hosting NCAA championships".

There were 43 states selected to host at least one round of an NCAA championship, with Pennsylvania leading the way with a total of 53.

Greensboro will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA men's basketball tournament in 2020, and Raleigh will host the first and second rounds in 2021. "It's a shame to see that those concerns have already fallen by the wayside". Most notably, a men's basketball sub-regional was moved from Greensboro, N.C., to Greenville, S.C. The conference said after the compromise was reached its upcoming events would remain in place and the football title game would return to Charlotte for its contractual run there through 2019.

The NBA jacked this year's All-Star Game from Charlotte and relocated it to New Orleans due to the law as well. Venues in North Carolina next year will also be able to host baseball, women's gymnastics and men's golf. Now, with crossed fingers, we just have to hold out hope going forward that members of North Carolina General Assembly won't trip over themselves at the expense of the state.
