Northeast Ohio has seen gas prices climbing steadily now for a month, bringing the region closer to the national average of $2.39 for a gallon of regular.

The average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $2.18 in Louisiana on Monday, up 7 cents from a week ago. That's an increase of 9.3 cents per gallon during the last month and 34.6 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

"This is the type of volatility we've come to expect this time of year", Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA Auto Club Group, said. Average per-gallon prices jumped just five cents a gallon in Broward and Palm Beach counties and four cents in Miami-Dade, according to AAA figures.

No state is showing an average of below $2.00 a gallon Monday morning. Syrian airstrikes and the shutdown of Libya's Sharara oilfield have added only more uncertainty going forward as oil prices jump higher.

On one hand, demand for gasoline is up while supplies of refined gasoline are down as refineries start switching to summer blends of gasoline, he said. AAA, though, agreed that prices will continue to rise because of scheduled and emergency refinery maintenance, and a switch to more expensive summer gasoline blends in many parts of the country.

Suspect in Custody Following Attack in Sweden
Sweden's crown princess Victoria held back tears as she left flowers for the victims at the site of the attack on Saturday. A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "We now know that a British man was killed during the attack in Stockholm ".

Nationally, the spike was not as dramatic, with the average at $2.389, up from $2.326 a week ago and $2.303 at this time in March.

According to DeHaan, the continued increases are completely seasonal in nature.

Yet South Florida - where prices vary widely and average prices are always higher than the state and nation - was spared a steep hike.

Also worth watching: Oil prices have been surging in recent days, with a barrel trading for almost $53 on Monday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, about $3 more than a week ago. That was the highest level since August 2015, AAA said. Hawaii remained the only state over $3 per gallon with an average price of $3.05 per gallon.

On Tuesday, benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 32 cents to close at $53.40 a barrel in NY, its sixth gain in a row.
