A day before the two-day summit between the leaders of the world's two most powerful economies, which ended Friday, Pyongyang launched its fourth missile test of the year, in what appeared to be part of an effort to develop a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike the US mainland.

Trump asked Xi for ideas on how to proceed, but held out the possibility of unilateral action.

"We have been looking very carefully at that", Ross said.

Although China's state media went strong on photos and coverage of the Xi-Trump summit, it gave little space to news of the strikes against Syria, with few editorials or commentaries.

Mr Xi urged co-operation on trade, invited his host to visit China and said there were "a thousand" reasons for them to get on.

Trump had campaigned with strident anti-China rhetoric and had angered Beijing before taking office by talking to the president of Taiwan, the self-ruled island Beijing claims as its own. "That's the first time I'd heard them say that".

"We had a long discussion already".

Commerce secretary Wilbur Ross said that "the most interesting thing to me was they expressed an interest in reducing their net trade balance because of the impact it's having on money supply and inflation". Mnuchin added that "any such transaction" would have to be reviewed by the Committee on Financial Investment in the U.S., which can block sales of United States companies to foreign investors.

On Thursday night, conservative USA news media painted the Syria hit as a bold but calculated warning to China . Trump said China had "raped the US" and vowed to brand the superpower a currency manipulator.

On Monday, Moon Jae-in, the presidential candidate of the liberal Democratic Party, stressed that South Korea should take the initiative in handling the North Korea issue.

His Cabinet secretaries said that Trump indeed confronted Xi. President Donald Trump spoke with officials in both Seoul and Tokyo to discuss the "full range of options" open to both America and our allies when faced with a threat before the ships were ordered to change course. "The president underscored the need for China to take concrete steps to level the playing field for American workers, stressing repeatedly the need for reciprocal market access".

Trump administration National Security Adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster said North Korea has created a "pattern of provocative behavior".

China has agreed to "strong" new measures to punish North Korea if it carries out a nuclear test, Seoul said Monday after the USA signaled it may act to shut down Pyongyang's weapons program.

Trump informed the Chinese leader personally of the strike as the 59 Tomahawk missiles were winding their way to the Shayrat airbase. Trump told reporters the strike was in response to a nerve gas attack by the Syrian regime against civilians Tuesday.

Some also raise the possibility that the United States may consider a "decapitation" strategy, a targeted attack to remove the enemy's leadership. It was the first direct US assault on the Russian-backed government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in six years of civil war. "I don't think that [deploying nuclear weapons] is a good idea".

Tillerson later clarified that during the meeting "President Trump noted the importance of adherence to global norms in the East and South China Seas and to previous statements on non-militarization".

But there was one message that the Chinese leader likely received.
