Four people shot at California elementary school

At least two people were killed and two more were injured in a shooting at an elementary school in California on Monday, authorities said.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said the shooing happened inside a classroom at Northpark Elementary School in comments he posted to Twitter.

A San Bernardino police official says two children wounded in a shooting at an elementary school were not the targets.

The third victim was a a teacher, according to Maria Garcia, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino City Unified School District.

Mr Burguan said other students had been transported to nearby Cajon High School. San Bernardino police officers were on the scene within four minutes of the initial call. Those two children are in critical condition, officials said.

Pupils were being taken to a local college campus, Ms Garcia said.

San Bernardino's police chief later tweeted that the incident appears to a murder-suicide. Aerial video showed lines of students walking across campus recreation fields and basketball courts as authorities evacuated the school. It was not immediately clear whether the campus has metal detectors or other equipment created to prevent weapons from being carried into the school.

In one of the most notorious school shootings in modern United States history, 20 children and six staff were massacred in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

The shooting occurred in a classroom at North Park School.

Others in the school were taken to a high school for safety. One of the victims reportedly was a teacher.

The violence is an open wound on a city trying to recover from a prolonged bankruptcy and the 2015 terror attack. The shooters, a married couple named Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, died later that day in a shootout with police.
