Tornado threat, strong storms loom for U.S. South, Midwest

Tornado- The tornado threat is now much lower across our region.

The storms will affect Alabama, Florida, Georgia and SC before moving into the OH and Tennessee valleys, according to the National Weather Service.

"Rivers are elevated due to recent rain events, and the additional rainfall will likely lead to more flooding", according to a statement issued by the agency. Unstable air is in place over much of the area with instability values off the charts.

"This could be a very risky situation today as a widespread severe weather outbreak is expected to develop with long-track and strong tornadoes, damaging wind and very large hail", James said through the release. A few strong, violent, long-track tornadoes can not be ruled out, especially in the moderate and high risk areas.

The second round of severe storms could develop between midnight and 6 a.m.

Update 12 p.m.: The tornado watch for Lee County and eastern Alabama has expired as the first round of storms come to an end.
