Passengers - Speak up to stop drivers from distracted driving behaviors and offer to help with anything taking the driver's attention off the road. Instant messaging could be done by computer - but texting on phone, not so much.

"We have an obligation to those who suffered losses to combat distracted driving with every means we have", Porrino said.

"People are drifting in and out of lanes while they're reading emails or writing responses or texting".

In recognition of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, motorists are reminded that an estimated 3,477 people were killed nationwide in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2015, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Nassau County police will also be participating in the enforcement, the department said. But this month brings more incentive - if common sense isn't enough - to keep hands on the steering wheel and off the phone while driving.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene. "U Text. U Pay", scattered all over the passenger side of Moore's vehicle, said Detective Sgt.

"One call or one text can lead to one awful mistake on the road, which in turn can have lifelong repercussions for motorists, cyclists or pedestrians", Terri Egan, the DMV executive deputy commissioner and acting chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, said in the release.

Teens were the group most likely to be involved in distracted driving crashes.

Michigan's texting law, too, allows an officer to make the stop and write a ticket without having to witness some other violation.
