"The David's Sling system joins our previous technological developments such as the Iron Dome and the Arrow systems", Netanyahu said.

A joint US-Israeli missile interceptor meant to counter medium-range missiles has become operational, completing Israel's multi-layer defence system amid tensions on its frontiers with Lebanon's Hezbollah, Syria and the ruling group of the Gaza Strip Hamas. At the time, the project was known as Short-Range Ballistic Missile Defense (SRBMD) to distinguish it from the much heavier and longer-range threats that the US-Israel Arrow was created to intercept.

David's Sling, also known as the "Magic Wand", joins the Iron Dome and Arrow systems, with all three missile interceptors jointly developed and funded by the us and Israel.

The system is equipped with the Stunner interceptor missile which have two targeting and guidance systems installed in its nose-tip (a radar and an electro-optical sensor).

Along the Israel-Syria border, the IAF has reportedly struck Syrian military targets and Hezbollah weapons convoys several times in recent months, prompting Syria to fire a surface-to-air missile at an IAF plane and causing Israel to activate Arrow for its historic first operational use in March.

In the ceremony, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Israel's enemies not to test its military capabilities. "Whoever threatens our existence places himself in existential danger".

Referring to the biblical story of David and Goliath, Netanyahu added that just as King David protected the Jewish people 3,000 years ago, Israel will continue to follow in his footsteps. In his remarks, Syring said that the delivery of this system was due to years of hard work and heralds a "new tier of aerial defense".

"Together we can meet challenges a lot better than any of us can alone", he says.

It was developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and United States company Raytheon.
