Childbirth claims an Ebola-fighting hero

Tragically, she has now died from post-childbirth complications, but might have lived without the stigma against Ebola survivors.

Members of Karwah's small community in Liberia are reportedly "devastated" by the news of her death.

Salome Karwah Harris, 32, had become one of the country's prominent Ebola fighters after surviving the disease along with her husband in 2014. Until then, she had, along with James and her sister, Josephine Manley, survived the deadly Ebola virus disease (EVD) in 2014, when the virus ravaged through West Africa, including Liberia, where at least a recorded 4,809 persons died. But he then echoed the mistaken belief that survivors can transmit the virus, saying that "the hospital knew she had Ebola and they operated on her, which put them at more risk".

"I can do things that other people can't".

But Salome Karwah died a few days ago (in February 2017) not long after giving birth, and there are questions over whether her past infection played a role in how medical staff reacted to the symptoms she displayed when she was taken to hospital. "If an Ebola patient is in his house, and his immediate relative cannot go to him, I can go to him".

Manley doesn't know what caused the convulsions, but believes that something went wrong in the surgery. "The one-year-old, the newborn, they will grow up never remembering their mother's face", Manley said. Instead, "she was stigmatized".

"She made a huge contribution to MSF's work at the height of the outbreak in Monrovia".
